Oaxaca, with Mexico City & Huatulco

About the places we are visiting:

Mexico City – huge, friendly, chaotic, high altitude and a culinary destination, one either visits Mexico’s Capital for two days or for a lifetime. So we’ll take two days 🙂 

Easy-going and vibrant, Oaxaca City – this Capital of the most indigenous State in Mexico is beautiful, safe and friendly. Mexico’s culinary capital, people come from all over the world to study cooking, Spanish and to enjoy an eternal spring-like climate. Many of you have discovered this fine city on our virtual tours. It is also rated one of the best destinations in the world. 

I have been travelling there for 25 years and my Dad wintered there four times. 

Huatulco – The ‘Bays of Huatulco’ on Mexico’s south coast is hot, sunny, safe and friendly. This is even where whales winter for the perfect climate! 

January 10-23 2025

DAY 1 (Jan 10th) – Arrive to MEX. Take a private taxi to our central hotel! 

DAY 2 (Jan 11) – walking tour (with me) to the Zocalo (largest central plaza in Latin America)

DAY 3 (Jan 12) – The park area of Mexico City and, if you like, the Anthropological Museum. 

DAY 4 (Jan 13) – Transfer back to the airport and fly down to Oaxaca City! 

DAY 5 – 11 (Jan 13-19) Oaxaca

Here’s what our trip includes:

A full cooking class with chef Oscar – remember, chocolate comes from Mexico!

1 hour Spanish lessons per day in Oaxaca (optional, but worth it)

2 excursions – Monte Alban (the first planned city in the Americas) & a full day out of the city including perhaps the world’s largest tree!

Plenty of free time to explore the city streets, enjoy the flowers, birds and shops at your leisure – oh and watch the sunset from any number of terraces

Lots of lovely walking areas around the city with exercise opportunities – I’ll take you for a long walking tour 🙂 

From Oaxaca we will drive to the coastal mountains perhaps for an overnight (new road, so I haven’t decided), then down (way down) to the tropical coast.

Huatulco is wonderful and safe. One of the youngest resorts in Mexico. We will have an optional day trip looking for whales, turtles, snorkelling and laughing.

Technical Details

1. Fly into Mexico City (Or Oaxaca – OAX – if you want to skip the capital) 
2. Fly home from Huatulco (or via Mexico) either the 22nd or 23rd
3. We plan to use a very good, safe , central hotel
4. We’ll book the internal flight to Oaxaca
5. You will need to take care of airport transfers, we will take care of all other transport
6. In Oaxaca we’re planning to use a very clean 3+ star hotel walkable to everything (group loved it last year). We’re not including breakfast in Oaxaca this year as so many enjoyed walking to the park for a fresh juice!
7. Up in the mountains the hotel will be very basic. This is the adventure night of your trip.

9. Cooking classes, Spanish classes, tours, entrance fees all included and free time is a must – Oaxaca is very safe and I’ll take you for walks and organize a couple of group meals (not included)
10. January weather is almost always a blue sky in Oaxaca – warm days, coolish nights (the city is in the mountains at 1550 metres (5000 feet))
11. Final price will depend upon numbers, but budget $2500 USD pp for shared accommodation (plus flights)
12. Airport transfers on your own, unless we all arrive somewhere together
