Finn: Camp Chief Hector (3)
This was my home for the week. What an excellent house!
For the third time in three years, I recently enjoyed one week at an overnight camp in the Kananaskis Valley. At Camp Chief Hector (CCH) we spend one week canoeing, playing sports, sleeping in a tipi and horseback riding. Last year I slept in a Yurt!
Camp Chief Hector is situated about half an hour away from my hometown of Canmore. It is located on the traditional lands of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. During our time at camp, we learn about their culture – something I already feel quite close to, as I have friends who speak their language fluently! ãba waθtéč – hello!

Every summer I return to Camp Chief Hector and it is always a blast. This year I was reunited with some camp leaders that have been my counsellors in past years. I also met many new counsellors who were lovely.
Since being a Camp Chief Hector counsellor or camp leader is such a great summer job, people from around the world apply to the summer camp for an excellent work experience. Therefore there are many nationalities represented at camp and many very interesting peoples to talk to.
Camp Chief Hector is divided into sections, each section is either determined by age or the amount of time you are spending at camp. This year (Since I am now ten years old) I stayed in the Yamnuska section. The section is named after a mountain in the Kananaskis. Mighty Mount Yamnuska is the large cliff face you see when driving into the mountains (it was also in the film, Legends of the Fall).
We ‘Yamnuskas‘ had the opportunity to go to the waterfront to catch salamanders, go horseback riding and do many other activities that are very enjoyable.
At camp we learn about plants and animals native to the area of the Kananaskis and how they are able to survive the harsh conditions of the Alberta snow. At camp, animal sightings are very common – just this week we saw a black fox and several deer and elk.

Camp Chief Hector is a GREAT cultural, social and outdoor experience – for me, it is a summer highlight. Even my dad and uncle went to camp when they were my age. When at camp I learn a lot about animals and plants and the time offers break from media and technology. CCH is fun and I would love to be a counsellor there one day!
